“Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel”. What does the quote by Samuel Johnson (1775) mean to you?

This statement by the statesman Johnson doesn’t imply that he opposed patriotism. He did however criticize those opponents who raised the patriotism card when they ran out of other (fact-based) arguments.

Patriotism always implies running a thin line. How can anyone be proud of a country that was built by people (strangers in fact) that lived and died a long time ago? Patriotism means taking pride in the achievements of others, not your own. Countries come and go and have to be built (or at least maintained) by each single on of us, today, every day.
